A Butterfly Mailbox serving as a talking point for children.

Les Papillons association and its fight against child abuse

October 16, 2024

Les Papillons is a French non-governmental organization dedicated to combating all forms of child abuse. This fight is carried out through a unique and powerful initiative: Les Boîtes aux lettres Papillons, an innovative system that enables children to express themselves anonymously and confidentially, through the written word. This project, the first of its kind in France, enables young victims of violence to express themselves freely, without fear of reprisals, and to seek help.

Origins and history of Les Papillons association

Founded in response to a crying need to protect children and give them a voice, Les Papillons was born of the desire of its founders to set up a simple but effective system. The idea for the Papillons Mailbox came about after observing the difficulties encountered by many children in speaking out about the abuse or violence they suffer. In 2019, the association was officially created, with the aim of multiplying speech collection points in strategic locations such as schools and social centers.

Why Papillon letterboxes?

The idea behind the Butterfly Letterboxes is simple: to offer children a way of expressing their fears, doubts and experiences without feeling judged or exposed. Young victims of abuse often can't find the words to tell an adult, or don't trust those around them enough. With these boxes, writing becomes a means of liberation, a way for these children to reveal their suffering at their own pace and in complete confidentiality.

Papillons mailboxes are set up in schools, associations and other places frequented by children, to be accessible to all. These boxes are not only intended to receive complaints, but also questions, concerns or simply words of support that other children may wish to share.

How Butterfly Mailboxes work

The system is designed to be simple and intuitive. Once installed, each box is regularly checked by trained volunteers from Les Papillons, who ensure that messages are handled with the utmost care. Each report is then passed on to the appropriate authorities, whether social services or the police, when the situation so requires. In other cases, the association endeavors to provide appropriate psychological and legal support.

Butterfly Mailboxes offer children a safe space to confide in. They enable them to break the silence surrounding abuse, often characterized by shame or fear of reprisal.

The importance of anonymity in freeing speech

One of the key aspects of the Papillon mailbox system is the guarantee of anonymity. Many children are afraid to report their abusers for fear of not being believed or of reprisals. Les Boîtes aux lettres Papillons allow victims to write freely, knowing that their identity will remain confidential. This anonymity is essential to freeing the word and encouraging children to share their experiences.

The impact and results of the Les Papillons association

Since its creation, the association has seen a significant increase in the number of children reporting cases of abuse or asking for help. Feedback from schools and families has also been extremely positive, with many testimonies of children who have been able to benefit from rapid care thanks to this initiative.

Anchoring Butterfly Mailboxes in schools and other key locations

Les Boîtes aux lettres Papillons are mainly installed in schools, where children spend a large part of their day. By placing these boxes in schools, the association aims to give every child a chance to speak without pressure. In addition, regular awareness-raising events are held in schools to explain to children how to use the boxes and remind them that they are not alone.

How can you support Les Papillons?

There are many ways to support this vital cause. Whether by making donations, volunteering or proposing the installation of a Papillons Mailbox in a school or social structure, everyone can contribute to the fight against child abuse. The Papillons association also offers training courses for adults (teachers, educators, etc.) on how to detect signs of abuse and how best to react.
